Workshop diagnosis is free for any computer brought into the shop — except laptops with liquid damage, which take serious time to assess properly. So I do this honestly:
If your data matters: I'll check whether the laptop is economical to repair and give you a quote. If it's not worth fixing, I can recover your data for £50.
If your data doesn't matter and you just want a repair quote: £30 to open the laptop and assess the damage. That covers my time even if you decide not to go ahead with the repair.
Either way, you'll know exactly where you stand before any work happens.

I hold two Master's degrees: an MSc in Electronics from Ukraine (1989) and an MSc in Computer Science from Middlesex University (2002). I trained as a computer forensics specialist — work that requires both technical skill and the kind of discretion you'd expect from someone handling evidence. I currently hold security clearance to work with the Ministry of Defence, where I continue to do contract work supporting Royal Engineers and EOD teams.
